Weather

The climate of the United States varies considerably from coast to coast due to the vast array of geography in the country. Eastern USA has a humid continental or subtropical climate, with four distinct seasons, whilst the Southeast has mild winters and hot humid summers. The Northeast and Midwest of the country have colder winters with frequent snowfalls. The farther west, the Great Plains are dry and flat, and are subtropical/semi-arid in Kansas and regions south of the State, and dry continental north of the State.

The Western United States is mostly mountainous hilly terrain, and has a mostly arid climate with mild to warm winters and hot summers. California, is considered Mediterranean, and consists of warm winters and hot summers. A maritime climate can be found in the Pacific Northwest such as Washington. Hawaii, most of Florida and far southern Texas have a tropical climate.

It is best to check the weather for where you are travelling specifically.

Baggage

Please check you baggage restrictions with your airline.

Clothing & Accessories

During summer months, it is advisable to wear light garments and perhaps keep a light jacket or sweater handy. It is advisable to carry a light waterproof jacket or umbrella, as well as a hat or cap.

Passengers should also carry suitable footwear as per the itinerary of the tour e.g. comfortable trainers for a tour.

Passengers should also carry travel adapters so they can charge their electronic items in their hotel room (as the sockets in USA vary from those in the UK).

Passengers may also want to carry a small travel iron, hair dryer, kettle etc., as many hotel rooms will not have these facilities.

Your mobile phone may be able to receive calls whilst on holiday, you can check with your network operator to switch on the roaming feature of your mobile, there is usually an additional charge to receive incoming calls whilst aboard.

Please ensure you carry all medication you will need on tour as well as names and doses of medications you are taking or copies of prescriptions.

Currency

The currency of USA is the Unites States Dollar ($). Conversion rates vary daily and are available online.

Currency exchange centres are rare outside the downtowns of major coastal and border cities, and international airports, however, many banks can also provide currency exchange services. Most automated teller machines (ATMs) can handle foreign bank cards or credit cards bearing Visa/Plus or MasterCard/Cirrus logos; note, however, that many ATMs charge fees. Stores almost never charge a fee for this service, though the bank that issued your card may.

When making large purchases, it is typical for U.S. retailers to ask to see some form of photo identification. The US has not yet implemented the EMV "chip-and-PIN" credit card authorization system in many places.

There is no nationwide sales tax (such as VAT or GST), the only exception being motor fuels like gasoline and diesel. As a result, state and/or local taxes on major purchases cannot be refunded by customs agents upon leaving the United States. However, most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are: Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15-20% of total, Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless), Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab, Shuttle bus drivers: $2-5 (optional),  Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%, Parking valet: $1-3 for retrieving your car, Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional), Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, 15-20% for larger orders, Tour guides / activity guides $5-$10 if he or she was particularly funny or informative and Tips of 10-20% are expected in both yellow cabs as well as livery cabs

Children & Young Infants

Car seats are not provided on coaches but passengers should carry car seats with travelling infants for comfort and safety.

It is the passengers’ responsibility to make sure of necessary arrangements for any children in their group. Milk and baby food cannot be provided by the hotel or restaurants and passengers are advised to carry ready to drink milk whilst on tour. Dry food is allowed on the so please feel free to bring snacks for children.

Please also note that not all hotels provide a kettle so if hot water is required for warming milk etc in the hotel then it is advisable to carry a bottle warmer / kettle as well as a thermos flask.

Pushchairs can be kept in the baggage lockers of the coach, although size restrictions may apply. We recommend that you consider using a pushchair for younger children.

Wheelchairs

We will accept light weight manual wheelchairs for travel, subject to them being capable of being stowed in the luggage hold of the coach.  It is also essential that a family member is also on the tour to push their wheelchair. Star Tour’s will also request hotels for suitably equipped rooms; however, this is only on a request basis and cannot be guaranteed.

Getting Around

There is no tour manager on this tour.  All tickets/vouchers and instructions will be provided to you before travel.

Transfers to theme parks will be conducted by a shuttle service offered by the hotel. Please check for timings with the hotel.

Dinners will be in a Indian restaurant which closes at 22:00hrs. You will need to walk to the restaurant which is under ten minutes walk. Beverages are not included.

Hotels

All hotels have a minimum, 3* category. Facilities will include en-suite bathroom, a TV and telephone. Some also include bars, restaurants and 24-hour reception. If you use services such as the phone or mini bar, or pay TV whilst in your room, you will have to pay the hotel directly when you check out; these services are not included in your tour cost.

Rooming Configuration

Most of the hotels Star Tours use can only accommodate a maximum of three people in each room however if you are a family of four, i.e. two adults and two children, then your first child will be given an extra bed but the second child will be required to share the bed as no extra bed can be provided. The fourth bed is on request and is not guaranteed.

Travel Insurance

Star Tours strongly recommends you purchase travel insurance. Passengers are advised not to carry unnecessary valuables and to be vigilant at all times as tourist spots are well known targets for pick pockets. It is advisable to make copies of your visas and passports prior to travel.

Breakfast will be provided at the hotels. The breakfast is usually in a separate dining area of the hotel, and is usually an extended continental breakfast; it will include tea, coffee, breads, cereals, fruit
