Dubai general Information

Time: GMT +4.

Electricity

The typical dubai plug is the british 3 pin. However most of the electronics you will purchase in Dubai will have the european 2pin plugs.

Passports

Passport should be valid for a minimum of three months for tourist purposes from date of arrival required by all nationals.

UK nationals must travel with a passport reading 'British Citizen' as national status.

Health

Medical facilities are of a very high quality but are extremely expensive. You are strongly recommended to obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. It should cover local hospitalisation and medical repatriation to your country of residence.

Go prepared for the heat. Use a high factor sun block and drink plenty of bottled water to guard against exposure and dehydration, which can result in serious health problems

Some prescribed and over the counter medicines that are available in the UK are considered to be controlled substances in the UAE. Any such medication is not allowed into the UAE without prior permission from the UAE Ministry of Health. If a passenger arrives in the UAE without prior approval and the required documentation, the medication will not be allowed into the UAE and the person may be subject to prosecution under the laws of the UAE. A doctor's prescription should be carried along with any medication that is brought into the country.

Insect and animal bites can be painful, set off allergic reactions, or become infected. Some also spread diseases such as malaria and rabies. Avoid insect and animal bites by using insect repellent on exposed skin.

Climate

Dubai has an arid climate with very hot, humid summer weather averaging 42c. (108F) in the daytime and 28 (84F) at night. Falls and Springs are still rather hot, with daytime temperatures between 25 and 40 degrees (80sF) and nights around 20 degrees (65-75F), with less humidity. Winter weather is pleasant and dry, with daytime highs of 25 (75F) and night-time lows of 10 degrees (55F).

Dubai is known for its beaches, with water temperature in summer getting as hot as 37 degrees (99F). The water temperature tends to be around 20-25 degrees (75F) in winter, and 30 (85F) in spring and fall as outside temperatures rise.

Food and drink

Even food that looks fresh and tastes delicious can carry germs. Follow these guidelines to ensure you remain well while away:

  • Wash hands with soap and water before handling any food.

  • Try to eat well-cooked food that is hot all the way through.

  • Food eaten immediately after cooking is the safest. Food that is left to stand after cooking and food from street stalls is more likely to be contaminated.

  • Stick to bottled or canned drinks rather than drinks such as fresh juices that may be diluted with tap water.

  • Do not use ice in drinks as this is usually made from tap water which may be contaminated in some destinations.

  • Salads and fruit if washed in tap water may also carry contamination. It is generally best to eat only food that is thoroughly cooked, or peeled.

Clothing & Accessories

Dubai is a weird and wonderful place; it’s a huge buzzing metropolis by the sea that sprawls out into the middle of the desert. This concoction of different aspects makes for a unique holiday experience, and it also makes for a fresh challenge in packing.

Sunscreen is essential, the sun beats down virtually all year round in Dubai and you will need some protection. Another essential is a decent hat. You could just use a baseball cap although these tend to get quite hot and sweaty. A safe bet is a bucket hat (sometimes known as a fishing hat) which is a great choice because it provides good cover from the sun for your face and the back of your neck too. They’re also usually made of cotton, so they breathe easily.

Clothing should be light, linen trousers and t shirts are ideal, as are shorts. Lighter colours reflect the heat from the sun’s rays, whereas darker ones absorb them, so you will stay extra cool. A quick word on footwear – sandals or flip-flops and trainers are the best options, as well as pair of shoes for evening dinners.

Toiletries are good to pack, especially as you do not know in advance what your hotel might have – but bear in mind that all your favourite products will be widely available in Dubai’s many malls and supermarkets. Some shaving foam, a razor and some anti-perspirant will be useful but also shower gel and shampoo might be a good thing to bring too.

Money

UAE Dirham (AED, also written as Dhs) Notes are in denominations of AED1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5.

Traveller’s cheques are widely accepted, though not often used. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.

ATMs accept foreign debit and credit cards including Switch, Maestro and Cirrus, and can be found throughout the UAE, in shopping malls, hotels and petrol stations.

Banks opening hours vary depending on the branch and bank; however a rule of thumb is Sat-Wed between 0800-1300 and Thursday’s 0800-noon.  All are closed on Fridays and public holidays.

Tourist tax fee of AED20 will be charged to passengers directly at all hotels per room – Please ensure you have allowed for this

You will also be asked to provide your credit card as a security by the hotel. This is standard practice in Dubai.
